Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC)
and Japanese Immersion: A Case Study on Developing
Sociolinguistic Competence Through E-mail

This paper will report on two projects that have been using computer-mediated communication, mainly electronic mail, to provide opportunities for Japanese tertiary immersion students to improve aspects of sociolinguistic competence through regular structured contact with native Japanese interlocutors. Implications for the language classroom and research methodology will be discussed.
