Steven Thorne is the Independent Evaluator of the NFLRC. He is associate professor of second language acquisition (SLA) at Portland State University. He has experience as independent LRC evaluator (2010–14). His teaching & research interests include SLA, new media & online gaming environments, and theoretical & empirical investigations of language, interactivity, & development. He is frequently invited to present on topics including Internet communication and information technologies, intercultural communication, cultural-historical activity theory, corpus linguistics, second language development and pedagogy, and ancestral/indigenous language revitalization (specifically the Yup’ik in Alaska). His book length works include a co-edited book, Internet-mediated Intercultural Foreign Language Education, and the co-authored volume Sociocultural Theory and the Genesis of Second Language Development.
