Animal Action News Program: Help Wild Animals Stay Wild

A Project Prototype by I-Ling Hsu

published on Oct 1, 2016

The key driver for eating is hunger for sure but the eating habit we have is not solely determined by physiological or nutritional needs. Different factors, especially cultures, attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge, about food can influence people’s eating choice of food.

Given the fact that it may bring the negative impact to the society, there is a need for a greater understanding of the determinants that affect food choice. This project examines the major influences on food choice with a focus on those that threaten the environment and wildlife animals.

Launching the Project

Interview, writing, creating a video

1.     Interview the Chinese communities- Based on the reading reports, the students design a questionnaire together to interview native Chinese. Questions may include (but not limited to) Have you ever eaten wildlife animals? What kind of animals? What occasions? Interviews reinforce students’ acquired knowledge of the wildlife animals topics and stimulate rich content and structure for the news report and learn about the culture difference.

2. Critically examine a Chinese news video about the eating culture of wildlife animals- Find a Chinese news video about the eating culture of wildlife animals. Search by “the keywords of your topic + news, topic, discussion, or survey,” etc. E.g. “endangered animals China” “endangered animals survey.”  Cultural videos stimulate rich content and structure for the news report and generate different views.

3. Write an article about the cultural practices of serving wildlife animals at restaurants, present appropriate responses to help face such issue, and raise the awareness of animal protection.

4. Create a news program to present your ideas.
