LEARNING IN AN ONLINE COMMUNITY

Currently, the University of Hawaii hosts four advanced study, web-based courses: three in Chinese and one in Japanese. Students, both in Hawaii and the U.S. Mainland, have formed a lively on-line community and are cooperating in the completion of a series of rigorous weekly learning activities. The activities are a mix of on-line interaction with and feedback from the instructors and on-line independent learning activities. Two of the Chinese courses feature off-line independent assignments for advanced study using CD-ROMs developed at the University of Hawaii. (To see details about the CD-ROMs, search on Chinese CD-ROM at http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/).

COURSES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
SPRING 2008

All courses follow the same instructional model, but each is based on a different series of lessons. The CD-ROM used in CHN 331 and 332 is available from the NFLRC at a nominal charge of $20, with no shipping charge added. (Versions for both PC and Mac are available.) The course format is expanded in the final weeks of the course to a language-exchange format involving colleagues in the country where the target language is spoken: both sides of the exchange perform identical tasks in the other's language and then trade feedback. At all stages of the course the teacher is actively involved with the students, managing and monitoring student progress and giving feedback.

Universities, Colleges, and Businesses

For an institution-to-institution partnership, including training for businesses, the interested faculty member or administrator should follow these steps:
  1. Determine the need for these courses at your institution. How many students would be interested? What are their backgrounds? (How much Chinese or Japanese language study have they had?)
  2. If needed, establish a framework for granting credit from your own institution. For example, these courses may be offered under existing course rubrics such as 399 - Directed Readings.
  3. Contact Stephen Tschudi <stephen.tschudi@hawaii.edu> to make specific arrangements. We will need to coordinate academic calendars and draw up an agreement, and then plan publicity and ensure smooth coordination as the course progresses.

FEEDBACK
Student comments from evaluations of the courses

"Overall this course is very useful. It is easy to follow and the structure is clear." —L.M., Asian Studies Major

"I truly enjoyed this unit. The new vocabulary will make it easier for me to describe my feelings (likes and dislikes) of movies I have seen to Chinese friends. I can be more clear and precise in my description, which will help in having longer and more varied conversations about the movies, both Western and Chinese." —Y.Y., Finance Major

"New words are introduced that are helpful in reading other texts and in writing letters to friends." —S.G., Chinese Language Major

"Challenges my mind and stretches the limits of my vocabulary." —N. S., US Air Force cadet
