In the traditional classroom, any realia or authentic materials brought in by the teacher must be held up in front of the class and/or passed around for the students to see; in neither of these cases is it possible for all students to view the object closely simultaneously. The visual presenter (often referred to by the brand name "ELMO"), with its zoom and focus capabilities, offers the distance education classroom an advantage over the traditional classroom in this respect.

 

Displaying a New Years' Card. The instructor uses the zoom and focus controls on the visual presenter to show students a Chinese New Year's greeting card. The handwritten greeting inside the card is then accessible to all students as reading material.
