Federal funding for the Title VI Language Resource Center (LRC) Program has been abruptly discontinued after 35 years of work in world language education. As a result, many LRCs including the NFLRC will be unable to carry out most of their activities planned for the fourth year of the current funding cycle (2025–2026). Learn More

PBLL in Action: Professional Learning & Research

    • Project Lead(s): Julio Rodriguez (NFLRC PI)
    • Period:

PBLL in Action is a two-part initiative by the NFLRC that supports language teachers in designing high-quality Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) experiences and conducting Action Research (AR) in their own classrooms.

    The program includes:

    • required online course (Envisioning PBLL) to build shared understanding
    • Summer institutes (University of Hawai‘i 2023, Yale University 2025). The PBLL in Action institutes were co-led by Dr. Mamiya Hernandez (PBLL) and Dr. Betsy Gilliland (Action Research).
    • Post-institute support through group meetings and mentoring
    • Research awards for high-quality reports submitted by participants

Beyond the core professional learning goals, the aim of this program is to generate a body of action research that improves and deepens our understanding of effective PBLL practices. As part of this program, the NFLRC will publish a PBLL Action Research Guide (coming soon) , offering practical strategies for designing and conducting action research aligned with PBLL principles.

    Why Action Research?
This initiative is grounded in the belief that Action Research (AR) is a powerful tool for teachers to improve their PBLL practices through systematic inquiry and simultaneously provide insights and guidance from a teacher perspective. The AR process also contributes to the profession by producing research that is deeply rooted in classroom realities and informed by the actual challenges of practicing teachers.
