§ Using Hanzi as much as possible, and Pinyin (WITH
TONE MARKS!) only when you are desperate, write a short
autobiographical statement about 100 characters long. You
MUST include the following information:
- Your Chinese name
- Your place of birth (use "shi4...de"
construction)
- The amount of time you have studied Chinese (use
"verb object verb le
amount-of-time le")
- Two of your likes or dislikes, with a reason for
each ("yin1wei4 reason, suo3yi3
wo3 [bu4] xi3huan...")
- Two leisure activities that you often do, and
where you do them ("chang2chang2 qu4
[OR zai4, not both] place verb")
§ The original copy of your composition will be used
by your classmates in class. MAKE A CLEAR DUPLICATE COPY
to hand in to the teacher AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS
TOMORROW.

§ In IC T Level One, Part Two, study
Dialogue 1 (not Dialogue 2, yet) of Lesson 21: Travel.
There are many ways to study, but here is one suggestion
(since we do not yet have tapes); make your own
variation.
- Start with the English translation at the back of
the chapter, and without looking at the Chinese,
translate as much as you can into Chinese. (Your
translation will probably be mostly gu3 jia4zi --
skeleton -- without much rou4.)
- Next, try to fill in gaps by looking at the VOCAB
LIST ONLY (beginning of chapter).
- Finally, compare your Chinese version with the
actual Pinyin version that appears toward the end
of the chapter, and study the Pinyin version
until it is familiar.
- When you are familiar with the Pinyin version,
read the Hanzi version, lightly marking
characters you do not recognize. AVOID FLIPPING
BACK AND FORTH TO THE VOCAB LIST. Consolidate
your study of the vocab into one block of
"characters I didn't recognize during my
last reading."
- After studying the vocab, as a last activity read
the Hanzi version as best you can without looking
at the vocab list.

§ In accordance with the travel profile
you did during today's speaking activity, write a set of
complete statements in Hanzi, including the following
information:
- The country you are planning to visit
- What you are planning to do there. Visit all
kinds of places? Buy all kinds of things? Look
for a spouse while teaching English? Go camping
at a lot of spots?
- The status of your visa. Have you applied? Are
you waiting? Is it done?
- The airline you are planning to buy from, and the
reason why. Are they offering a discount? How
much? Are they the most convenient, and it's not
a problem if it's a little more expensive?

Weekend
|
8/28-30 |
§ In IC T Level One, Part Two, study
Dialogue 2 of Lesson 21: Travel. § For a speaking
activity on Monday, pretend that you have now bought your
ticket to your dream destination. Your trip is actually
more of a tour than just a journey to one place. Plan
specific answers in Chinese for questions about the
following:
- Where you are leaving from.
- How much it cost, and what the discount was (if
so). Also: HOW MUCH CHEAPER OR MORE EXPENSIVE THE
TICKET WAS COMPARED TO ANOTHER CARRIER.
- One-way, or round-trip? Is the trip to the
country direct, or are there changes of
plane/vehicle?
- Your in-country itinerary: Describe how many days
you will spend at each place, in sequence. There
should be four stops, at least.
