Notes for this week:

Day Date Homework
Mon 1/12 § Make a picture of items on a shopping list for a clothes buying spree. Make a separate written version of the list.
§ Make a written statement of what you feel is important when buying clothes.
Tues 1/13 § Read IC T Lesson 4 Lesson text (p. 55-60). Don't forget your study strategy (if you like this way):
  • read the English version; then the Pinyin texts (guessing vocabulary), circling things you don't know; check vocabulary list if necessary; and finally, read the Hanzi versions.

§ Prepare to participate in a debate about what is important in buying clothing: Price? Brand? Quality? Materials? and so forth. Formulate arguments to support your point of view and come to class ready with at least five sentences you think you will need to use both written down (Pinyin OK) and MEMORIZED. Maybe they're straight out of the text -- no problem!

Wed 1/14 § WRITTEN HOMEWORK. Here is the procedure: You decide how you would like to approach this. Some people like to get the answers first and work backwards from them; I don't recommend this, because it is too passive and you will not internalize the grammar as well as if you try it by yourself first. At any rate, even if you like working backwards from the answers, you should FIRST read through the grammar section of the chapter in the TEXTBOOK and try to recognize and think about the patterns you see there. Then turn to the WORKBOOK exercises, which are based on those patterns. If you find the exercises difficult, the answer is probably somewhere in the grammar section, but if you're really stuck you can check the answer key. Homework is due the following day, and you should show the teacher that you have completed the assignment so that you can receive full marks (4 points) for that day. Receive-site students should also report to the teacher on completion or non-completion of the assignment. Checking the accuracy of your work is up to you, using the key on the Web.
§ TONIGHT: Read through the lesson text again and look at the grammar section. Then, on your own, do IC W L4 II (Speaking Exercises, p. 37). Since you won't be speaking, jot down what you WOULD say using Pinyin/Hanzi.
