Homework

Mon 2/8 Note: This was originally last Friday's homework.

§ TONIGHT: IC W L11 V (Translation) AB. Today's key

§ ALSO: Do the specific information activities today and bring your answers, AND A PRINTOUT OF THE ARTICLE EXCERPT, to class on Monday. We will do linguistic activities connected with the text, and you will need a printed version. Highlighter pens, anyone?

Tues 2/9 § Prepare for a test on IC L11.
  • On the reading section of the test, be prepared to fill in TWENTY characters in a cloze task based on the text.
  • With respect to vocabulary, be prepared to use all the words we came up with in our class vocab "quiz," and be prepared to give any vocabulary from L11 whose definitions you will see in Chinese (beyond the scope of the vocab "quiz" we did). An example would be "bu4 neng2 bu4 zuo4" for "ren3bu4zhu4." (You will be offered a menu of choices.)
  • With respect to usage, review the grammar section carefully. Here are some "safe rules" that will help you when I ask you to use the words in the grammar section:

You can always use yi3lai2 instead of the lai2 which is introduced here -- you might sound a little non-native, but not wrong. So let "yi3lai2" be what you always use for "since..." and "for the past X amount of time."

Cai2 and jiu4 should be pretty familiar. Remember that when you use cai2, no le goes at the end.

When you use hao3 bu4 rong2yi4, you're probably going to use cai2. Why is that?

Zai4san1 is not hard, but after you look at my notes and the next section (gen1/xiang4/dui4), come back and look at the verbs used in the example sentences for zai4san1. Notice anything?

The section on "gen1/xiang4/dui4" is a bit overwhelming. Here's the important part: Which of these you choose all depends on the main verb in your sentence. The example sentences in the book are all the same, using only four verbs: xiao4, dian3 tou2, shuo1, and jie4. With all of these verbs, gen1/xiang4/dui4 are interchangeable, with one exception: you cannot borrow (jie4) something using "dui4"; you have to use "gen1" or "xiang4." Just remember those four verbs (although the textbook author is hoping you will also remember biao3shi4 "to express" and shuo1ming2 "to explain") and remember the rule about "borrow." Q: How is this different from the way you use gao4su?

  • For listening/speaking, each one of you will be individually assigned a destination from the destinations listed on page 200 that your classmates will not know. Without revealingthe name of the destination, you must answer questions from your classmates that will allow them to identify the place you have been assigned.

§ Take your tape to the lending-desk (Moore 156) and have them record over your old material the following:

  • CB 812.1 Textbook: "Zhongguo de jieri" (19 minutes)
  • CB 812.2 Workbook (5 minutes)
Wed 2/10 § TONIGHT: Read IC T L12 Text.
Thurs 2/11 § TONIGHT: IC W L12 II (Listening Comprehension) B all (parts 1 and 2).Today's key
