The Nā Pua No‘eau Ke Ola Mau Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the Spring 2014 semester. The Scholars Program supports Native Hawaiian students attending either the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo or the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, who are majoring or intend to major in a healthcare field. Eligible students may receive stipends to assist with community service and/or internships and research projects in respective healthcare fields. This past year, students who participated in the Ke Ola Mau Scholars Program worked with various community organizations to complete community service and advance their development in the healthcare fields. Participating students worked with community organizations like the UH Mānoa Health Careers Opportunity Program, the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Nā Pua No‘eau, Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‛Ōiwi–Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems, the UH Hilo Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center and the Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center. Students also took part in health-based internships and research projects around the state. The participating organizations and individuals included, Hui No Ke Ola Pono, Dr. Dana-lynn Koomoa-Lange and Dr. Susan Jarvi of the UH Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, Dr. Luukia Ruidas of Kupuola Primary Care, Dr. Edlynne Pua Akana of the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and Dr. Benjamin Chavez of the Wahiawa General Hospital.
