The Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT) is a regional world language teachers’ organization that hosts an annual conference in partnership with state world language teacher associations. The participating states in SWCOLT are Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai‘i, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.
The purposes of the organization include:
- Disseminating and publicizing information, data, and materials which promote, develop, and enhance the study and teaching of languages together with their literatures and cultures
- Recognizing and publicizing excellence in second language study and teaching
- Promoting the work and interest of state language organizations
- Cooperating with state, national, and international organizations whose purpose is to enhance second language study and teaching
Our 2024 Conference will be held in conjunction with the Hawai‘i association of Language Teachers (HALT) at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel (on Kūhiō Avenue). This year’s conference theme comes from the Hawaiian ‘ōleo no‘eau (proverb), “I ulu nō ka lālā I ke kumu,” the branches grow because of the trunk. The word “kumu” in Hawaiian can mean “trunk,” but it can also mean “teacher” or “source.” We chose this theme to honor our teachers as a source of language and cultural knowledge.
The NFLRC is pleased to co-organize and co-host this event.
